Orientation
for new members/Orientación para nuevos miembros
AGUILAS members are Latino men that identify as gay or bisexual and
reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. New members need to attend a
welcoming session where they will get more information about the program.
Tell us about yourself and feel free to ask questions about who we
are and what we do. Share your views, issues and opinions. Oh, and
dinner is on us! At the orientation session you need to complete a
confidential questionnaire, and then you'll get to participate in
a very interesting empowerment workshop based on Brazilian educator's
Paulo Freire Empowerment Theory. This session is designed to develop
in-depth understanding through community building and involvement.
As a new program participant, you'll get to meet and interact with
other Latino gay/bisexual men. This is the building block for developing
a sense of community. This orientation also focuses on aspects of
HIV and health, which strengthen and deepen the resilience to high-risk
behavior. After you participate in the orientation, you will be officially
an AGUILAS member. Your involvement after that is up to you. Get involved
in our volunteer program, or participate in our workshops and events
as you wish or as your time allows. You will receive invitations to
special events, and courtesy reminder calls to our bi-monthly meetings
for members only. When we call, we always respect any discretion instructions.
You will also receive AGUILAS news, our monthly newsletter. If you

Los miembros de AGUILAS son hombres Latinos que se identifican como
gays o bisexuales y viven en el área de la bahía de San Francisco.
Los nuevos miembros ingresan al programa al participar en una sesión
de bienvenida en donde recibirán más información acerca del programa.
Cuéntanos de ti, y pregúntanos cualquier duda que tengas
sobre quienes somos y lo que hacemos. Expresa tus opiniones y puntos
de vista. También te invitaremos algo de cenar. En esta orientación,
necesitarás completar un cuestionario confidencial. Después
participarás en un taller basado en la teoría de auto estima
desarollada por el educador Brazileño Paulo Freire. El propósito
es desarollar y fomentar los lazos comunitarios y la interacción
entre hombres Latinos gays y bisexuals. Los nuevos participantes tienen
la oportunidad de convivir con otros miembros, lo que es la base para
desarrollar un sentido de comunidad. El taller se enfocará
también en aspectos del VIH y la salud, que fortalecen y aumentan
la resistencia a la conducta de alto riesgo. Después de participar
en esta orientación, serás oficialmente un miembro de AGUILAS.
Tu participación después de eso depende de ti. Puedes involucrarte
según lo desees, o tu horario lo permita. Participa en nuestro
programa de voluntarios, o en nuestros diferentes talleres y eventos.
Como miembro recibirás invitaciones a eventos especiales, y recordatorios
por teléfono sobre las juntas bi-mensuales para miembros solamente.
Cuando nos comunicamos contigo, siempre respetamos tus intrucciones
si necesitas discreción. También recibirás AGUILAS news, el boletín
